Troubleshooting your GPRS connection

The information below summarizes the most common problems with GPRS service and provides tips to prevent or overcome them.

General recommendations for installing your GPRS internet connection

1. Connecting your handset to the computer (please see the option which applies to you)
Serial cable connection Always use the cable recommended by the telephone manufacturer. If you use third party cable, make sure it is compatible with your handset before purchase.
USB cable connection  Remember to install the USB cable software (supplied with the cable) before you install web'n'walk Manager software.
Bluetooth connection Make sure you install the Bluetooth connection first (using software supplied with computer or the connecting device) and pair your computer with handset. If you encounter any problems when pairing the devices, please refer to Bluetooth device manual or contact your Bluetooth vendor.
Infrared connection If you haven’t used the infrared port before, check whether it is installed properly (it should be visible in the Device Manager in Windows). It is recommended to avoid connecting your handset with the infrared port before installing the web'n'walk Manager software. In some cases, Windows would automatically install generic modem drivers, which would not be suitable for your terminal.
Important: Install the web'n'walk Manager only after you have set-up the connection between your computer and handset.

2. Installing web'n'walk Manager software (setup of modem and Internet connection)
Installing your handset as GPRS modem
  • Always use the web'n'walk Manager for setting up the Internet connection on Windows systems.
  • Make sure your web'n'walk Manager software version is up to date (version date appears on the first screen). If you’re using wnw manager CD which was bundled with your handset, there’s no need to check as your handset will be supported. In other cases, make sure the version is not older than your terminal. You can download the newest version of the software from www.t-mobile.cz/sw.

Please note: Some handset models not sold through the T-Mobile distribution are not supported by wnw Manager. For those handset models, as well as for non-Windows systems, please setup the connection manually using instructions found at the end of this document.

Nokia handsets Enter the APN name in terminal’s menu. The path to this setting varies at different terminals, it can be either:§ Menu > Settings > GPRS modem settings > Edit active access point > GPRS access point > Edit active access pointor§ Menu > Connectivity > GPRS > GPRS modem settings > Active access point > Access point 1 > Edit active access point > GPRS access pointOnce you have reached the APN name setting, change it to: internet.t-mobile.cz .
MDA II organizer If you want to use MDA II as GPRS modem with your PC, you have to disable ActiveSync first by selecting the follow:Connection Settings > Allow USB connection Then unselect the checkbox „Allow USB connection with this desktop computer“.
E-mail client setup parameters  To retrieve your e-mails from any IMAP/POP3 e-mail service, enter the following to tour e-mail client:IMAP/POP3 server for incoming mail: depends on your e-mail service (plesse check with your e-mail service provider).SMTP server for outgoing mail: smtp.t-email.cz
Please note: You cannot use this SMTP server to send e-mail when connected to Internet through other ISP than T-Mobile. For example, if you use a laptop connected sometimes via GPRS and sometimes via your office LAN, you need either to change the SMTP server name at each occasion, or use SMTP autentication. Please contact your system administrator to explore the latter option.

The most common errors encountered on Windows systems

General error types

The possible causes of GPRS problems fall into two broad categories: terminal/PC settings and GPRS network.

Terminal/PC connection and settings   Examples of this category include malfunctioning cable, improperly installed modem driver, improperly paired Bluetooth etc.Troubleshooting modem problems is easier with modem diagnostics provided in Windows “Phone and Modem Options” control panel. The diagnostics queries the modem (i.e. GPRS-enabled handset or other terminal) and if there’s no answer, you need to check all possible causes of improper connection between the terminal and your PC. You can reach the modem diagnostics here:Start > Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems > choose the respective terminal (i.e. Option Globetrotter PC Card) > Properties > Diagnostics > Query Modem
GPRS network problems  You should focus on this area in case you have trouble connecting to GPRS, but modem diagnostics in GPRS works correctly.

List of Windows errors

The table below shows the recommended solution for each Windows error message. When you encounter connection problems with the given error number, try the steps in the order suggested. Try to connect (or diagnose your modem) after each step to check whether your problem has been fixed.

Error ID Cause of error Recommended procedure
619 Port disconnected

This error often occurs when incorrect modem drivers are installed or the handset is set up incorrectly.

  • Restart your PC and handset.
  • If you use PC Card (PCMCIA) GPRS modem, try to eject and re-insert the card into its slot (you should hear the Plug&Play connection sound).
  • Check whether you don’t use any programs, which would try to use the handset/data card at the same time. These would most typically include fax applications or synchronization software. If you use such software, close the application (note that minimizing into tray is not sufficient, it has to be closed).
  • Check the communication between your handset and PC using the control panel diagnostics (please see the instructions at the beginning of this section)
  • Remove and then re-create the dial-up connection in Windows control panel “Network and dial-up connections”. Check all the connection parameters carefully.
  • Uninstall and then re-install the drivers and software of your terminal (remember to re-assign the newly installed modem to the GPRS dial-up connection).
628 It wasn’t possible to create connection to the remote computer and you were disconnected.

Try the following steps (try connecting again after each step):

  • Check whether all the connection parameters in control panels are correct (check the sections for dial-up networking and modems).
  • Try decreasing the modem port speed in control panel to 115200 or 57600.
  • Check the communication between your handset and PC using the control panel diagnostics (please see the instructions at the beginning of this section)
  • Uninstall and then re-install the drivers and software of your GPRS terminal (remember to re-assign the newly installed modem to the GPRS dial-up connection).
629 The connection was closed by remote computer

The cause of error may be improper setting of:

  • APN (please check the modem settings in control panel)
  • User name or password (both should be left blank)

Please note: Windows sometimes fills your Windows login into the dial-up networking login window. In such a case, clear the username and password blank before connecting.

630 Hardware problem with terminal or port used for connection

Try the following steps (try connecting again after each step):

  • Restart your handset and PC
  • Make sure you the handset is connected to the same port for which the modem driver was installed (e.g. COM 1)
  • If you have changed the hardware configuration of your PC, make sure that the Dial-up networking is configured for the proper modem.
  • Check the communication between your handset and PC using the control panel diagnostics (please see the instructions at the beginning of this section). If the query fails,
    • Check whether the serial cable between your PC and handset is firmly connected at both ends.
    • Make sure your serial cable can be used with modem.

Please note: Do not use 9 to 25 pin converters supplied with serial mice. While these converters work with mice, some of them are not capable of carrying the signals needed for modem connection.

633 The modem is already in use or is not configured for dialing out.
  • Handset is used by another application which prevents its usage for establishing internet connection. Close all applications (e.g. fax or synchronization software) which could cause the collision.
  • Check the modem configuration in the control panel.
  • If the problem persists, please use the instructions listed at Error 630.
645 Computer hasn’t been able to contact the modem.
  • Please use the instructions listed at Error 630.
678 The phone number is likely to be wrong.
  • Make sure you call the proper number and that no calling prefixes or long distance codes are used.
  • If you use Nokia handset, enter the APN name in the handset menu. (See the “Installing the web'n'walk Manager” section above for instructions.)
680   There’s a problem with dialing the phone number.
  • Configure the modem so that it does not wait for the dialing tone (use Phone and Modem options control panel).
  • For users Windows 2000/XP/ista (32/64-bit): Make sure that the dial-up networking uses the correct modem: your GPRS handset or PC card.If you have any other modems installed on your PC, please unselect them so that Windows never tries to use those modems.
692 The terminal most likely does not communicate with PC.
  • Check the communication between your handset and PC using the control panel diagnostics (please see the instructions at the beginning of this section).
  • Is the infrared connection still active?
  • Is infrared port linked with the PC?
  • Does your handset work when you try to use it with another computer?
720 Improper settings of TCP/IP or PPP protocol
  • In GPRS connection properties, go to card Security and select the following checkbox: “Allow unsecured password.”
  • If you use Nokia handset, enter the APN name in the handset menu. (See the “Installing the web'n'walk Manager” section above for instructions.)
734 The APN name and/or the AT string have not been entered correctly.
  • Try repairing modem settings:Start > Control panel > Phone and Modem Properties > Modems > choose the right terminal (e.g. PC Card Option Globetrotter) > Properties > Advanced > Extra initialization commands:AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.t-mobile.cz"
  • Check whether the phone number in dial-up networking is:*99***1#
  • Make sure that login credentials are not filled. If there’s any text in the login and password field, clear it blank.
738 Remote server hasn’t assigned you any IP address

Your terminal or PC does not properly communicate with the GSM network. Restart your computer and handset.

  • TCP/IP properties of the GPRS connection (Control panel > Network and Dial-up Connections > click right mouse button Properties > Networking > TCP/IP > Properties) must have the following options checked:
    • Obtain IP address automatically
    • Use default gateway of the remote network

The “Use IP header compression” should be however left unchecked.

  • If you use SonyEricsson handset, make sure you use proper CID:
Connectivity > Data communication > Preferred service > GPRS and GSM; Connectivity > Data communication > Data accounts > first position Choose > (CID=1) Edit > APN: internet.t-mobile.cz > User id: blank > Password: blank > Password request: Off > Allow calls: Automatic > IP address: blank > DNS address: blank > Advanced settings > Authentication: Normal > Data compression: Off > Header compression: Off > Quality of Service: do not change.Alternatively, you can add a new data account and based on the CID assigned, you can change the AT command and number dialed.
  • If you use Nokia handset, enter the APN name in the handset menu. (See the “Installing the web'n'walk Manager” section above for instructions.)
777 Service not active or some other problem on the GSM network side.
  • Restart your PC and handset.
  • Make sure your GPRS service is active (send SMS from your handset containing text GPRS S to number 4603).
  • You may have improper GPRS setting (incorrect or absent APN) and/or you use username and password.
  • Check the communication between your handset and PC using the control panel diagnostics (please see the instructions at the beginning of this section).
  • Check in GPRS modem properties that proper initialization string is used (see Error 734 for details).
797  Modem not found or not responding
  • Check the communication between your handset and PC using the control panel diagnostics (please see the instructions at the beginning of this section).
  • If you use SonyEricsson handset, make sure you use proper CID in the number dialed. In the default dialed number *99***1#, replace the 1 with currently used CID.
  • If you use Bluetooth to connect to your PC, the problem may be in improperly installed Bluetooth device, which should communicate with your handset.
